Lunar New Year celebrations kicked off with specials on bok choy, Chinese cabbage, snow peas, garlic, green onions, and daikon radish.   Citrus was also highly promoted for the holiday, especially pummelos, tangerines, and oranges.  The beginning of Lent put lemons and limes in the spotlight, along with other seasonal staples such as chayote, poblano peppers, and portobella mushrooms.  Dates and tomatoes were featured for the observance of Ramadan, which also commenced this week.  Potted and cut tulips and daffodils hinted at the coming of spring.  \n\nTotal ad numbers this week were 293,337, a 1% decrease from last week's total of 295,799. The total for the same week last year was 4% lower at 282,900.  The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 168,656 (57%), onions and potatoes 29,298 (10%), vegetables 91,630 (31%), herbs 759, ornamentals 1,698, hemp 198, and honey 1,857.  The number of ads for organic produce was 39,804, 14% of total ads.  \n\nThe following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year.  Significant increases in price for fruit this week included seedless grapes by the pound (white at 15%, red at 13%) and apple juice (64 oz.) at 11%.  Significant decreases included lemons (2 lb. bag) at 17% and avocados at 16%.  Significant changes for potatoes and onions this week included increases for 5 lb. bags of potatoes (round red at 36%, yellow type at 19%); there were no decreases.
