Winter citrus became more abundant, with new crop California Meyer lemons and Texas grapefruit adding sparkle to ad flyers. Hanukkah staples like grape juice, potatoes, and carrots were on special at virtually every store. Apples in a multitude of varieties were advertised heavily for baking and Hannukah celebrations. Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries were featured for fruit salads and desserts. Fresh and bagged nuts were popular for snacking and baking. Poinsettias, greenery, and Christmas cactuses added holiday cheer in the floral department.\n\nTotal ad numbers this week were 274,030, a 9% increase from last week's total of 252,276. The total for the same week last year was 1% higher at 277,170.  The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 161,920 (59%), onions and potatoes 22,741 (8%), vegetables 74,270 (27%), herbs 677, ornamentals 10,806 (4%), hemp 1,801, and honey 2,492.  The number of ads for organic produce was 38,574, 14% of total ads.  \n\nThe following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included round mangoes at 26%, pomegranates (each) at 17%, and blueberries (1 pint) at 13%.  Significant decreases included Bartlett pears (per lb.) at 16%, white seedless grapes (per lb.) at 16%, and organic Gala apples (2 lb. bag) at 11%.   There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week.   There were no significant increases nor decreases in price for vegetables this week.
