Nonetheless, stores had a wide array of springtime favorites, such as asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, mushrooms, cabbage, and avocados.  Citrus was popular with lemons and limes available for Lenten meals, tangerines and dekopons for snacking, and Cara Cara Navels and blood oranges for a twist on the standard orange.  Standbys like grapes, avocados, apples, and berries were well-featured.  Several retailers featured Passover sections where dry grocery staples were merchandised alongside honey, grape and apple juices, apples, and romaine lettuce.  Easter decorations and candy occupied most seasonal sections of ad flyers.  Easter lilies made their first appearance this week, joining daffodils and tulips in springtime displays.\n\nTotal ad numbers this week were 251,476, a 7% decrease from last week's total of 271,644. The total for the same week last year was 17% higher at 301,638.  The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 144,721 (58%), onions and potatoes 26,241 (10%), vegetables 75,816 (30%), herbs 1,115, ornamentals 2,661, hemp 60, and honey 1,977.  The number of ads for organic produce was 34,256, 14% of total ads.  \n\nThe following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year.  Significant increases in price for fruit this week included only Granny Smith apples (per lb.) at 17%.  Significant decreases included only strawberries (1 lb. package) at 16%, avocados (each) at 13%, Bosc pears (per lb.) at 12%, and raspberries (6 oz.) at 11%.  There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week.
