Super Bowl Sunday is a little over a week away, and already stores are filled with necessities such as avocados, cilantro, tomatoes, limes, lemons, and all sorts of fruit and vegetable snack trays. Valentine's Day is still 2 weeks away, but Cupid has already been making the rounds. Stores are brimming with bunched and potted flowers, candy, cards, and bakery items. Typical Valentine's Day staples like strawberries, cherries, and raspberries were popular this week. The Lunar New Year will be observed on February 17, ushering in the Year of the Fire Horse, along with specials on favorites like bok choy, Chinese cabbage, oranges, Gala and Fuji apples, apple pears, tangerines, grapes, and pomelos. Retailers also acknowledged and promoted foods associated with other February cultural holidays, such as Black History Month and Mardi Gras, with deals on sweet potatoes, cooking greens, garlic, and celery. Total ad numbers this week were 270,431, a 7% decrease from last week's total of 291,957. The total for the same week last year was 1% lower at 268,202. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 153,755 (57%), onions and potatoes 23,456 (9%), vegetables 88,684 (33%), herbs 1,791, ornamentals 2,021, hemp 1,126, and honey 1,389. The number of ads for organic produce was 28,183, 10% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included blackberries (5.6-6 oz package) at 11%. Significant decreases included avocados at 22%, red seedless grapes at 16%, and white seedless grapes at 10%. There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week. There were no significant increases nor decreases in price for vegetables this week. |
