Retailers made sure to offer deals on ingredients for hearty meals to keep shoppers warm and within budget. Vegetables were very popular, particularly mushrooms, red and green bell peppers, cabbage, greens, broccoli, and tomatoes. Onions and potatoes of all varieties were well featured. Imported cherries were tops for the fruit ads, followed by blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Total ad numbers this week were 291,957, a 5% increase from last week's total of 276,958. The total for the same week last year was 9% lower at 268,583. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 155,994 (53%), onions and potatoes 23,470 (8%), vegetables 106,199 (36%), herbs 1,319, ornamentals 2,076, hemp 2,539, and honey 1,679. The number of ads for organic produce was 41,591, 14% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included blueberries (1 pint) at 25%, round mangoes at 17%, and raspberries (6 oz.) at 12%. Significant decreases included red cherries at 11% and pineapples at 10%. There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week. There were no significant increases in price for vegetables this week. Significant decreases included red bell peppers at 20%, green cabbage at 13%, and green bell peppers (each) at 12%. |
