A variety of specialty citrus such as dekopons, blood oranges, Meyer lemons, pummelos, and Cara Cara oranges were featured alongside the more familiar lemons, limes, and oranges. Tulips, daffodils, and potted hyacinths graced floral sections with the first hint of spring to come. Early Valentine's Day ads have also arrived, showcasing floral arrangements, specially decorated baked goods, and meal ideas for sweethearts. Total ad numbers this week were 276,958, a 3% increase from last week's total of 268,213. The total for the same week last year was nearly equal at 278,851. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 161,939 (58%), onions and potatoes 24,525 (9%), vegetables 85,124 (31%), herbs 675, ornamentals 1,752, hemp 1,796, and honey 1,822. The number of ads for organic produce was 35,418, 13% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included blackberries (5.6-6 oz.) at 12% and avocados at 10%. Significant decreases included only seedless grapes (red at 28%, white at 21%). Significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week included only a 17% increase for Russet potatoes (5 lb. bag). Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included broccoli crowns at 13% and zucchini at 10%. Significant decreases included on-the-vine tomatoes at 31% and Roma tomatoes at 17%. |
