New crop corn and sweet onions, including Vidalias fresh from Georgia, were popular options for grilling, along with colored bell peppers and eggplant. Mangos, cantaloupes, strawberries, pineapples, and grapes were plentiful for fruit salads or refreshing beverages. Early ads for graduation and Mother's Day promotions were seen in many flyers. Total ad numbers this week were 245,848, a 6% decrease from last week's total of 262,308. The total for the same week last year was 22% higher at 313,925. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 136,165 (55%), onions and potatoes 23,743 (10%), vegetables 78,832 (32%), herbs 1,623, ornamentals 1,281, hemp 3,174, and honey 2,653. The number of ads for organic produce was 32,151, 13% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included white seedless grapes (per lb.) at 27% and pineapples (each) at 32%. Significant decreases included avocados at 38%, organic tangerines (2 lb. bag) at 21%, blackberries (5.6-6 oz. package) at 16%, round mangos at 16%, lemons (2 lb. bag) at 14%, raspberries (6 oz. packages) at 10%. Significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week included only an 18% decrease for Russet potatoes (5 lb. bag). There were no significant increases nor decreases in price for vegetables this week. |
