30 2025-10-10 Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity Pumpkins Galore From miniature to pie varieties to jumbo sized jack o' lanterns, pumpkins of all sizes decorated stores and ad flyers this week. Eighteen varieties of apples were reported this week, perfect for baking, bobbing, or covering with caramel. Other fruits such as grapes, pears, persimmons, pomegranates, and cranberries provided an autumn flavor to ads. Not to be outdone, vegetables like acorn and butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes round out the harvest season offerings. Potted and fresh cut marigolds were on hand for Dia de Los Muertos ofrendas. Total ad numbers this week were 293,986, a 5% decrease from last week's total of 308,054. The total for the same week last year was 5% lower at 279,845. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 147,683 (50%), onions and potatoes 22,463 (8%), vegetables 116,857 (40%), herbs 2,257, ornamentals 1,108, hemp 4,424, and honey 1,451. The number of ads for organic produce was 49,979, 17% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included Honeycrisp apples (per lb.) at 18% and apple juice (64 oz.) at 13%. Significant decreases included Bartlett pears (per lb.) at 23%, yellow peaches (per lb.) at 18%, and cantaloupes (each) at 10%. Significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week included only a 37% increase for yellow onions (3 lb). Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included asparagus at 18%. Significant decreases included large pumpkins at 11%.
