Late season peaches, plums, and nectarines were displayed with new crop pears and pomegranates. Asparagus and corn were showcased alongside pumpkins and hard squash. Promotions for Rosh Hashana and Halloween occupied a good deal of ad space. Seasonal sections were bursting with chrysanthemums, fall decorations, and Halloween candy. Total ad numbers this week were 289,953, a 1% decrease from last week's total of 293,624. The total for the same week last year was 8% lower at 269,521. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 154,570 (53%), onions and potatoes 18,238 (6%), vegetables 106,236 (37%), herbs 2,403, ornamentals 2,906, hemp 3,067, and honey 4,936. The number of ads for organic produce was 34,625, 12% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included Honeycrisp apples (per lb.) at 30%, apple juice (64 oz.) at 16%, white seedless grapes (per lb.) at 16%, and strawberries (1 lb.) at 10%. Significant decreases included pomegranates (each) at 19% and avocados (each) at 13%. There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week. There were no significant increases nor decreases for vegetables this week. |
