38 2025-08-15 Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity School Days This week back-to-school items were front and center as shoppers stocked up on kid-friendly fruits, vegetables, and juices. Grapes, tangerines, strawberries, baby carrots, and apple juice were among the most popular items. The first pumpkin-flavored bakery items appeared this week, hinting that fall is around the corner in some parts of the country. Nonetheless, peaches, nectarines, plums, watermelons, cantaloupes, corn, zucchini, mangoes, tomatoes, and cherries were featured heavily, indicating that there is plenty of summer left. As of this week, Specialty Crops Market News has added 11 new commodities to the National Retail Report, as well as 16 varieties and 43 packs sizes to commodities already reported. Total ad numbers this week were 318,130, a 9% increase from last week's total of 292,163. The total for the same week last year was 2% higher at 325,888. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 181,422 (57%), onions and potatoes 19,433 (6%), vegetables 112,774 (35%), herbs 2,813, ornamentals 1,426, hemp 3,075, and honey 138. The number of ads for organic produce was 42,369, 13% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included blueberries (1 pint at 20%, 6 oz. package at 17%), round mangoes at 12%, and white seedless grapes (per lb.) at 12%. Significant decreases included peaches (white at 22%, yellow at 20%), and white nectarines at 11%. There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week. Significant increases for vegetables this week included sweet corn (trays 4-5 ears) at 29%, green bell peppers at 19%, and cauliflower (each) at 11%. There were no significant increases.
