Packable produce favorites like grapes, baby carrots, kiwifruit, apples, plums, tangerines, and grape tomatoes were at the ready for lunchboxes and after-school snacks. Breakfast favorites like apple juice, strawberries, avocados, and blueberries were heavily featured. Many retailers dedicated ad space to school supplies. Local and regional produce was touted across the country. Total ad numbers this week were 292,163, a 1% decrease from last week's total of 293,688. The total for the same week last year was 2% lower at 285,699. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 183,056 (63%), onions and potatoes 20,923 (7%), vegetables 84,842 (29%), herbs 1,762, ornamentals 1,141, and hemp 2,201. The number of ads for organic produce was 37,825, 13% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included seedless grapes (black at 25%, red at 14%, white at 11%), organic seedless grapes (white at 12%, red at 11%), yellow peaches at 12%, yellow nectarines at 11%, and strawberries (1 lb. package) at 11%. Significant decreases included only red cherries at 12%. Significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week included only a 14% increase for sweet yellow onions (3 lb. bag). There were no significant increases nor decreases in price for vegetables this week. |
