40 2025-08-01 Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity Spicy Sales Hatch chiles were heavily featured this week in many areas of the country. Specials on grilling and roasting items like sweet onions, tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, pineapple, Olathe corn, and bell peppers were tied in with Hatch chile promotions. Deals on summer fruit were abundant, with cherries, peaches, grapes, watermelons, plums, cantaloupes, blueberries, mangoes, and nectarines being among the most advertised this week. Back-to-school ads were seen this week in many flyers, promoting school supplies and healthy snacks like apples, baby carrots, tangerines, and berries. Total ad numbers this week were 293,688, a 15% increase from last week's total of 256,029. The total for the same week last year was about the same at 294,605. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 182,771 (62%), onions and potatoes 14,418 (5%), vegetables 91,238 (31%), herbs 737, ornamentals 2,690, and hemp 2,571. The number of ads for organic produce was 51,502, 18% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included seedless grapes (black at 22%, white at 12%), organic blueberries (1 pint) at 17%, raspberries (6 oz.) at 12%, strawberries (1 lb. package) at 11%, and conventional plums at 10%. Significant decreases included red cherries at 23%, avocados at 20%, organic plums at 18%, organic yellow nectarines at 15%, organic yellow peaches at 14%, and conventional white peaches at 10%. There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week. Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included only long seedless cucumbers at 28%. There were no significant decreases.
