44 2025-07-04 Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity Red Hot Deals This week retailers celebrated the red, white, and blue by offering sales on seasonal favorites. Watermelons, cantaloupes, peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, strawberries, Honeycrisp apples, and avocados were just a few of the heavily advertised options for cooling off with refreshing fruit. Vegetables were also popular, especially grill-friendly items that could be prepared outside of hot kitchens such as corn, bell peppers, eggplants, sweet onions, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. Many flyers contained patriotic-themed bakery, floral, and decorative items. Total ad numbers this week were 266,728, about steady from last week's total of 265,811. The total for the same week last year was 12% higher at 304,346. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 164,219 (62%), onions and potatoes 16,602 (6%), vegetables 83,891 (31%), herbs 706, ornamentals 108, and hemp 1,908. The number of ads for organic produce was 33,811, 13% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included seedless grapes (red at 73%, white at 57%), round mangoes at 38%, plums at 13%, yellow peaches at 13%, and strawberries (1lb.) at 12%. There were no significant decreases. Significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week included only a 12% increase for yellow sweet onions (per lb.). Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included on-the-vine tomatoes at 18%. Significant decreases included long seedless cucumbers at 28% and sweet corn (each) at 13%.
