Sweet potatoes, asparagus, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, green beans, mushrooms, carrots, cooking greens, and potatoes were on sale for holiday meals. Herbs like cilantro and parsley were advertised for use in dips and Seder plates. Fruits, especially strawberries and pineapples, were offered at affordable prices for snacking and desserts. Floral departments exploded with Easter lilies, tulips, daffodils, mums, and roses, accounting for a notable 6% of all grocery ads this week. Total ad numbers this week were 290,475, a 2% increase from last week's total of 283,904. The total for the same week last year was 2% lower at 284,354. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 133,911 (46%), onions and potatoes 28,148 (10%), vegetables 106,966 (37%), herbs 1,232, ornamentals 16,739 (6%), hemp 2,491, and honey 2,220. The number of ads for organic produce was 32,388, 11% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included only white seedless grapes (per lb.) at 40%. Significant decreases included pineapples (each) at 31%, raspberries (6 oz. package) at 13%, avocados (each) at 13%, strawberries (2 lb. package) at 10%, and organic tangerines (2 lb. bag) at 10%. Significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week included only Russet potatoes (10 lb.) at 11%. Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included green beans (12 oz. bag) at 39% and Brussels sprouts (1 lb. bag) at 15%. There were no significant decreases. |
