52 2025-05-09 Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity Mother's Day Specials Retailers offered deals this week that were almost as sweet as Mom. All the Mom's Day favorites like strawberries, blueberries, asparagus, and pineapples were on sale. Floral arrangements, bouquets, and potted plants dominated fliers, with ornamentals accounting for 5% of total ads this week. Shoppers were all set to cook up a Mother's Day meal outdoors, with grilling favorites like corn, colored bell peppers, and zucchini frequently featured, and watermelons and cantaloupes at the ready for dessert. Bakery departments had plenty of beautiful cakes and cookies decorated with mom in mind. Total ad numbers this week were 257,548, a 10% decrease from last week's total of 286,395. The total for the same week last year was 7% higher at 278,214. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 117,578 (46%), onions and potatoes 21,317 (8%), vegetables 103,679 (40%), herbs 732, ornamentals 13,471 (5%), and hemp 1,503. The number of ads for organic produce was 32,818, 13% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. There were no significant increases in price for fruit this week. Significant decreases included watermelons (each) at 11% and round mangoes at 10%. There were no significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week. Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included only zucchini at 12%. Decreases included long seedless cucumbers at 21%, baby peeled carrots (1 lb. bag) at 14%, on-the-vine tomatoes at 14%, and asparagus at 10%.
