53 2025-05-02 Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity Fiesta Time This week, most retailers offered Cinco de Mayo promotions, with specials on cilantro, avocados, jalapenos, onions, corn, Roma tomatoes, limes, lemons, cucumbers, and mangoes. Conventional and organic strawberries were heavily advertised ahead of Mother's Day, and just in time for the Kentucky Derby. Vidalia onions were prevalent, although the white and red varieties appeared in ads more frequently than usual. Seasonal sections showcased Mother's Day floral arrangements and gift ideas. Total ad numbers this week were 286,395, about steady from last week's total of 286,884. The total for the same week last year was 8% lower at 265,171. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 146,569 (51%), onions and potatoes 23,149 (8%), vegetables 111,924 (39%), herbs 7,103 (2%), ornamentals 1,680, and hemp 3,073. The number of ads for organic produce was 31,958, 11% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included only white seedless grapes at 26%. There were no significant decreases. Significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week included an 18% decrease for red onions (per lb.) and a 15% decrease for Russet potatoes (5 lb. bag), with no increases. There were no significant increases in price for vegetables this week. Decreases included jalapenos at 15%, cilantro at 13%, and Roma tomatoes at 11%.
