57 2025-04-04 Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity Springtime Specials Retailers offered plenty of promotions this week, focusing on the religious holidays of Lent, Easter, and Passover, as well as basketball and baseball games. Corn, asparagus, potatoes, carrots, beets, leeks, onions, and mushrooms were among the most popular vegetables advertised. Citrus of all varieties was well-promoted, with tangerines being the most advertised fruit this week. Strawberries, raspberries, grapes, and blackberries were popular for healthy snacking and springtime desserts. Imported summer favorites such as cantaloupe, watermelons, peaches, and nectarines were featured as the weather begins to warm in some areas of the country. Easter lilies made their first appearance in ads this week. Total ad numbers this week were 284,354, a 1% increase from last week's total of 282,595. The total for the same week last year was 2% lower at 277,695. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 155,313 (55%), onions and potatoes 23,168 (8%), vegetables 99,701 (35%), herbs 952, ornamentals 985, and hemp 5,187. The number of ads for organic produce was 38,367, 13% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included only cantaloupes (each) at 12%. Significant decreases included seedless grapes (white at 30%, red at 12%), Navel oranges (per lb.) at 14%, and yellow mangoes at 10%. Significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week included only a 10% decrease for Russet potatoes (per lb.). There were no significant increases in price for vegetables this week. Decreases included only long seedless cucumbers at 20%.
