Passover favorites like apple and grape juices, honey, apples, pears, horseradish root, and leeks were featured in special sections along with other holiday staples. Ads for pineapples, mushrooms, asparagus, cantaloupes, sweet potatoes, watermelons, grapes, avocados, and strawberries were plentiful as customers stocked up for Easter meals. Dekopons, tangerines, oranges, and lemons were well-featured. Daffodils, tulips, roses, and Easter lilies filled store aisles with spring colors and fragrances. Candy, décor, and baked specialties added bright holiday flair to stores and flyers. Total ad numbers this week were 283,904, a 13% increase from last week's total of 251,476. The total for the same week last year was about the same at 282,595. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 153,854 (54%), onions and potatoes 28,287 (10%), vegetables 84,659 (30%), herbs 914, ornamentals 11,616 (4%), hemp 2,959, and honey 2,529. The number of ads for organic produce was 30,785, 11% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included white seedless grapes (per lb.) at 12% and organic strawberries (1 lb. package) at 12%. Significant decreases included avocados (each) at 18%, raspberries (6 oz. package) at 10% and lemons (2 lb. bag) at 10%. Significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week included increases for 5 lb. bagged potatoes (yellow at 15% and Russet at 11%). There were no significant increases in price for vegetables this week. Significant decreases included white mushrooms (8 oz. package) at 24% and sweet potatoes (per lb.) at 22%. |
