93 2024-07-26 Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity Gold Medal Savings The start of the 2024 Olympic games gave retailers a great reason to promote healthy food items and party favorites alike. Cherries, peaches, nectarines, cantaloupes, grapes, honeydew, plums, watermelons, strawberries, and mangos were just a few of the fruit offerings to be found at peak flavor and nutritional value. Vegetables like cucumbers, baby carrots, yellow squash, asparagus, and zucchini were perfect for party trays or fresh salads. Avocados were heavily featured, not only for their popularity in guacamole, but also for National Avocado Day, July 31. Some school districts are beginning classes already, and several retailers had large back-to-school sections. Total ad numbers this week were 304,961, a 5% increase from last week's total of 289,950. The total for the same week last year was 2% lower at 310,966. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 179,199 (59% of all ads), onions and potatoes 16,208 (5%), vegetables 104,185 (34%), herbs 1,063, ornamentals 3,127, and hemp 2,242. The number of ads for organic produce was 45,199, 15% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included red cherries at 26%, organic yellow peaches at 19%, red seedless grapes at 17%, blueberries (18 oz.) at 11% and white nectarines at 10%. Significant decreases included Honeycrisp apples (per lb.) at 35% and avocados at 13%. Significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week included only a 16% decrease for Russet potatoes (5 lb. bag). Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included only corn (ea.) at 10%. Significant decreases included baby carrots (1 lb.) at 15% and long seedless cucumbers at 12%.
